Week 2: WIMBA: Copyright

Copyright is still an issue with TONS of gray! I do everything I can to not violate the rules/laws, but I, like Andrea said in her post would love a cheat sheet or cliff notes concerning copyright rules/laws. I am still wondering....so you cannot use anything copywritten even if you cite it?

  1. Hey Donna, I agree that copyright has a lot of gray issues and probably for a reason. I would think that most creations are created so that they can be shared with the world. But what is the world allowed to do with those creations? I think that because there is such a blurred line, people tend to make their own guideline as to how we will interact with copyright. It's not quite a cheat sheet, but the Library of Congress has a little website with videos and interactivity for students called Taking the Mystery out of Copyright at www.loc.gov/teachers/copyrightmystery. It is a great website to visit with students at the beginning of the year. Of course we can use things copy-written if we cite. Consider all the wonders that APA has taught us. Our texts our copy-written and when we use them we cite them.

  2. Yes... ask permission. You might be surprised. There's also Fair Use and Creative Commons to consider.
